Breast reduction surgery involves reducing the amount of breast tissue whilst uplifting the breast tissue at the same time. In order to achieve the desired outcome the nipples will need to be repositioned. The scarring will be quite visible in the immediate post-operative period, but will gradually fade to feint white lines with time.. Your surgeon will discuss the actual shape of the scar with you. Patients that have undergone breast reduction surgery often say they are so happy with the result that the scarring becomes less significant.
Normally a breast reduction can take 2½ hours to complete. However this is dependent on your size. The operation will always be carried out under general anaesthetic.
Following breast reduction you must be aware that it is unlikely that you will be able to breast feed . Alteration in nipple sensation may result , as well as numbness of part of the breast. Loss of sensation may be permanent.
