Indications for otoplasty
- Protruding ears.
- Asymmetrical ears.
- Congenital deformities of the ear.
Otoplasty is best performed on younger children whose ears have fully developed, typically around the age of five. While otoplasty can be performed on adults, most plastic surgeons recommend children undergo otoplasty before they start attending school, to minimise the risk of teasing from their peers.
Otoplasty is typically done on both ears to optimize symmetry. It is usually done as a day-case procedure.
Patients are required to wear a head bandage for a week post-operatively and to protect the ears while sleeping for 6 weeks.
